Job Description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated senior-level Marine Mechanical Engineer (Propulsion) to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC . An ideal candidate will have prior experience with developing ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and/or conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components, as well as familiarity with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support and documentation design, develop, and evaluate the operation of marine vessels, ship machinery, and related equipment, to include, but not limited to: power supply and propulsion systems.
  • Research and develop ship propulsion systems, to include, but not limited to: diesels, gas turbines, diesel-electric systems, propellers, rudders, thrusters, gears, shafts, bearings, seals, noise, vibration, and interfaces with dynamic positioning systems, and apply to applicable design and requirements.
  • Develop system documentation and ship specifications.
  • Design, develop and evaluate operation of marine vessels, shipboard propulsion machinery, and review and develop technical data packages, provide oversight on development of machinery arrangements, conduct and oversee trade studies.

Location: Full time onsite at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. May be limited local remote flexibility with customer approval.

Travel: Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks.

Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $120,000 – 150,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.

Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.

US Citizenship Required: Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this position supports, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment.

Security Clearance Eligibility Required: This position requires a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate must either already possess an active or interim Secret security clearance or be eligible for a Secret security clearance upon hire.

Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • At least six (6) years of progressive experience in Marine Mechanical Engineering fields.
  • Overall experience should include developing ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components.
  • At least one (1) year of experience related to U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs required.
  • Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs.
  • Knowledge of ABS, NVR, and commercial ship design rules and regulations.
  • Proficient with common productivity software.
  • Strong communications skills.
